Sights in and around Lausanne
Lausanne is the "Olympic capital city", university town, business centre, congress city and leisure destination. Due to its central location and the various cultural institutions, sport and entertainment facilities, Lausanne is still an insiders' tip and a true dream destination. Old city centre of Lausanne
The old city centre of Lausanne, with its impressive Gothic Cathedral built in the 13th century, is an absolutely must-see for any tourist. It is also Switzerland's largest cathedral and has a painted portal and a rose, constructed with 105 beautiful painted glass panes. The nearby alley ways are lined with cosy coffee shops and boutiques which invite to linger.
Olympic Museum Lausanne
The most important international sports associations are located in Lausanne. Soccer, cycling or equestrian, individual and team sport - all being practiced on a high level in this region. The Olympic Museum Lausanne is situated high above Lake Geneva. It shows an exciting overview of the history of the Olympic Games. Occasionally, an Olympic athlete visits the museum; what better way to feel the true Olympic Spirit?
The Castle Chillon, not far from Vevey and Montreux, located on steep mountains on the shore of Lake Geneva, was built in the 12th century. Even during the Bronze age the "rock of Chillon" was inhabited. The present form of the Castle Chillon was developed in a long work and impresses with a historic attention to detail.
Near Lausanne the beautiful vineyard terraces of Lavaux extend along the hillsides of Lake Geneva's bank. Discover them on idyllic trails or with the Lavaux Express that rides on two different routes. During your trip you can stop over for a tasting in traditional wine cellars and enjoy local delights. Since 2007 the Lavaux vineyards are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
Museum "Chaplin's World"
In spring 2016 the memorial place "Chaplin's World" opened its doors in Vevey (ca. 30 minutes from the hotel) on the former country estate of the artist Charly Chaplin. Walk through the scenes of his greatest movies and visit the private rooms of the manor, surrounded by a hugh park area that invites for a stroll.
Fondation de l‘Hermitage
The Fondation de l’Hermitage is placed in a gorgeous estate of the 19th century. It shows temporary exhibitions of painting and sculpturing. The Fondation is surrounded by a beautiful park overlooking the cathedral and Lake Geneva.
Museé de l’Elysée
The Museé de l'Elysée is dedicated to photography. The large collection contains more than 100'000 exhibited original prints from the 19th and 20th century. Furthermore the museum features numerous works of contemporary photographers.
Art Brut collection
The Art Brut collection consists of a donation of Jean Dubuffet to the city of Lausanne. A very special collection of art of amateurs is shown. All of the artists were residents of mental institutions or prisons. Let the exquisite artists such as Wölfl, Lesage, Carlos or Hauser impress you.
The famous Swiss ‘Gruyère’ cheese is produced in this picturesque, medieval village. We recommend to visit La Maison du Gruyère - the local cheese diary - for a cheese tasting. You should also discover the impressive Gruyère Castle and take a ride with the cableway up to the top of one of the surrounding mountains.
